Ballarat, Vic

Young rebels at the site of the Eureka Stockade ;-)

(22 Jan) Today we woke up slowly ready to learn about the Eureka battle. We went to the site of the stockade and the battle. We also saw a show about the battle.

The battle was the government versus the miners. The government was very bad because they were not elected. They made you pay lots of money for the miner's licence or they would chain you up. So the miners made their own flag of the Southern Cross led by Peter Lalor who was only 27. Then they said: "We swear by the Southern Cross to stand truly by each other and fight for our rights and liberties."

  1. What an exciting time you are all having! No mention of floods so hope you are travelling one step ahead of the water coming down from the north. Did you try your hand at gold mining in Ballarat? LOL Nan
