Torres Strait

3-4 Aug 2010:  Today we woke up early. We were all very excited about going to Thursday Island, so we quickly packed our bags and got on the ferry. Luckily we were early and got the good seats! When we were half way there one of the people who worked on the ship came around and gave us orange juice.

When we got to Thursday Island ("TI"), we went to the Cultural Centre (www.gabtitui.com.au). We had morning tea there and then we looked through the art gallery there. I saw a movie about pearl diving and how many people died from pearl diving and how dangerous and scary it was in the olden days of TI. Lots of boys went pearl diving to get money and to get a living. Then we went to the pub and had lunch and went to our motel and had a swim. Then we had pizza at the picnic tables on the esplanade and went to bed.

The next day we had a buffet breakfast and Mamma bought a pearl bracelet. Then we looked in the big old fort at the top of the hill. Then we went to have a look at the cemetery. There were hundreds of graves from the divers. The divers could have died by being eaten by a shark, or their pump broke, or someone made a mistake and pulled them up too fast and their body wasn't adjusted so they died.
