Macquarie Harbour, Tas.

Convict ruins on Sarah Island, Australia's most brutal prison

18 Dec 2015:

Today we woke up kind of quickly and walked to the docks where we got on a boat called the "Eye-Spy". We went through "Hell's Gates" (the narrow and very rough entrance between the Southern Ocean and Macquarie Harbour) and we stopped at Sarah Island and were shown what life was like for the convicts.  We also learnt about Huon pine at another stop - Mummy loves Huon pine. As well as this we also got an enormous buffet for lunch. When we got off the boat we relaxed for a while before going to see a play about an escape from Sarah Island. It was hilarious.

Hell's Gates. The passage is just 60m wide and very tricky. Convicts who went through Hell's Gates believed they would never come out again.

Chatting over ice cream on a hot afternoon in Strahan.
